JVNA Completes Her Creative Vision with New EP Violet Genesis
The five-track release revisits the melodic bass, anime soundtracks and JRPG-inspired worlds that shaped JVNA’s beginnings, rebuilt with the songwriting and production skills she has developed since.
Every artistic era has a starting point. For JVNA, Violet Genesis is a return to hers.
Out now, the five-track EP revisits the cinematic melodic bass sound that first defined the American-Taiwanese artist’s project, bringing together heavy sound design, ethereal melodies and the influence of anime and Japanese role-playing game soundtracks. But rather than simply recreating the sound of her earliest releases, JVNA approaches it with the experience and creative perspective she has gained through years of experimentation.
The result is a project that looks back without standing still. Across Violet Genesis, themes of love, resilience and overcoming hardship unfold through widescreen electronic production, balancing the weight of bass music with the emotional depth of a cinematic score.
September’s single Gravity provided the first glimpse of that direction. Built around JVNA’s own vocals, the track explores the experience of standing beside someone during their darkest moments and trying to help them rediscover hope. Its combination of intimate songwriting, gradually building production and melodic bass established the emotional foundation for the EP.
That sense of personal connection runs throughout Violet Genesis. As with her previous releases, JVNA wrote, produced and performed the music herself, maintaining creative control over the project from its initial ideas through to its release.
“This EP is me going back to where it all started. When it was still just for the love of it, before all the different eras. There was a sound that was just purely me — hopeful, ethereal, nostalgic. Heavy sound design, melodic bass, cinematic, anime OST and video game score inspired. That's where JVNA began, and that's where this album lives.”
For JVNA, revisiting that original sound also meant applying everything she has learned since its creation. More developed songwriting, a more mature vocal approach and stronger production techniques have allowed her to return to familiar influences with greater intention, preserving the qualities that first inspired her while pushing them further.
She describes the process as revisiting her original sound with new skills and techniques equipped along the way — an idea that fits naturally with the role gaming culture has played in her artistic identity.
The connection between music, storytelling and video game worlds has been present throughout JVNA’s career. Born in Los Angeles to Taiwanese parents, she began studying classical piano at six before expanding her musical education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where her interests developed into film and game scoring.
Anime and gaming subsequently became important influences on her electronic productions. Her early remixes attracted attention online, while the community she built through Twitch helped support her development as an independent artist. Fans even crowdfunded the music video for I'm With You, a self-directed tribute to her late father.
Her 2021 debut album, Hope In Chaos, explored loss and resilience, followed by Play With You in 2023, which embraced a darker sound and themes of empowerment. Each project revealed a different aspect of her identity, giving her space to experiment beyond the melodic bass foundations of her earliest work.
Violet Genesis brings those experiences together in a more deliberate return to the sound that started everything.
The nostalgia at the centre of the EP is not simply about recreating the past. It is about recognising the musical identity that has remained beneath every change in direction, and understanding how that identity has developed alongside the artist herself.
With its five tracks, cinematic scale and emotionally driven production, Violet Genesis reconnects JVNA with the influences that first inspired her to make music, while reflecting the creative growth that has taken place since.
Rather than treating her beginnings as something to move beyond, JVNA uses them as the foundation for what comes next. Violet Genesis is both a tribute to where she started and a clearer statement of who she is now.
